Evelyn and Will’s Wedding

Evelyn and Will were married at Spring Creek Ranch House in Winthrop, Washington State. Will is one of my oldest friends, and it was a great honour to be asked to photograph his nuptuals.

The evening before, Evelyn and Will rehearsed the main events of their big day.

This was followed by the ‘rehearsal dinner’ a particularly US tradition which gives everyone time to catch-up with family and make new friends.

The rehearsal dinner is also a great opportunity for friends to give extra ‘toasts.’ Here are Will’s high school buddies handing over the ball-and-chain which has been passed around their group for many years.

This photo was taken during my rather more ribald English style wedding speach. You can see from the look on Will and Evelyn’s faces how much they enjoyed and appreciated this particular trans-Atlantic cultural contribution.

During my speech giving Evelyn’s family a greater understanding of the man joining their ranks I made reference to one of Will’s better known party tricks – ‘the human flagpole’ (or ‘HFP.’) This is Will doing the HFP in New Orleans, Louisiana in 2007.

This is the HFP in Chicago, Illinois in 2012. These two images are part of a significant HFP archive spanning several American states and European cities. But rather than digress further on this subject we’ll get back to this blog’s main event: the wedding.

The location Evelyn and Will had chosen for their wedding was magnificent. Wisely, they had consulted the Farmers Almanac and chose a day with a track record of good weather. And on 7th September (coincidentally my parent’s wedding anniversary) – they were in luck!

Evelyn’s brother Doug walked her down the aisle, with the sun temporarily appearing to provide a
natural spotlight.

It was a beautiful ceremony, with readings from friends and a song sung by Jeff and Erin.

And… they’re married!!!

Cocktails were drunk as the evening light dappled across the ranch.

There were lots of western-style fashions being sported from cowboy boots and hats to bootlace ties (which I think I need to add to my wardrobe.)

Will, as well as being a highly qualified doctor and expert HFP pratictioner is also one of life’s great connectors. I have a large group of close friends in the US all thanks to Will. Over the years, I’ve also photographed lots of their weddings and they were all at Winthrop…

The toasts from Evelyn and Will’s brothers and their bridesmaids were lovely.

And then the dancing began. Now, I’ve seen some wedding bands in my time by the ‘Dusty 45s’ were in a class of their own.

And to round it all off… the flaming trumpet! Wow, that was one amazing wedding!!!
