This is one of those portraits where everything comes together perfectly – for just a few seconds. As I was photographing Richard and Gabriella in the doorway of the church their daughter Georgia came and joined us. To have this beaming smile from her – at the same time as her Mum and Dad was fantastic.

Gabriella and Richard were driven to the reception in a black cab. Their guests were taken in London red buses (more photos of these will be on the main gallery of photos.)

Catherine and Brad’s wedding, St Peter’s and The Andaz, London

Catherine and Brad were married at St Peter’s Italian Church, Clerkenwell on the 9th October. They held their reception at The Andaz, in the City of London.

A really special moment – as part of the service, the parents told everyone how they felt about Cathy and Brad’s marriage.

Watching the ceremony are Brad’s brother Daniel, and Cathy’s sister Louise. Just over five years ago I photographed Louise’s wedding to Michael in the same church. Cathy and Louise’s parents were also married at St Peter’s.

Claudia and Paul’s Wedding, St Peter’s and Gibson Hall London

Claudia and Paul were married at St Peter’s Italian Church, Clerkenwell on 25th September 2010. They held their reception at Gibson Hall in The City of London.

The Church from the organist’s gallery. St Peter’s is a stunning building, and from a photographer’s point of view, it’s great working in such a bright building. But something that is also special about St Peter’s is the relationship the ministers develop with the couples. They really care about the people they marry and promise to pray for them in the years to come.

Gibson Hall is a relatively new wedding venue. It used to be a bank and there are some fantastic photos (in the downstairs of the building) showing what it looked like about 100 years ago. It reminded me of the bank in Mary Poppins…

Jenny and Conor’s wedding, Ealing Abbey and One Whitehall Place

Jenny and Conor were married on 24th April 2010. The ceremony was held at Ealing Abbey with the reception at One Whitehall Place.

It was the first time I’d been to Ealing Abbey – its a magnificent and beautifully maintained church.

The ceremony was conducted by Abbott Martin

The group photo – this took a couple of minutes to arrnage, but with the stunning backdrop it was well worth it.

After a coach journey, the next stop was One Whitehall Place which used to be the old liberal club. It looks like little has changed since its Victorian and turn-of-the-century heyday. There are paintings of Queen Victoria and Albert, Churchill, Gladstone and other eminant figures from that time. Its a fascinating place for anyone with an interest in history to visit and you can almost imagine the conversations about empire, war and reform all being discussed in its rooms and corridors.

We took several photos on the stairway – and even a couple in the lift which you can see in the main wedding gallery.

Gladstone, bride and groom – a photo that should be on every wedding photographer’s shot list…

St George’s is a magnificent church, with a long and illustrious history. This is the view from the back of the church, right next to the organ.

The room for the wedding breakfast at Claridges looked fantastic. Just before the guests entered for their meal Michelle walked round and said to the staff, ‘Everything looks wonderful and I’m so happy with what you’ve done!’

Before the speeches we found a couple of minutes to take a set of photos in one of Claridges beautiful art-deco corridors. Michelle and Andrew were illuminated by candles in storm lanterns.

Michael managed to produce a couple of first class visual aides during his best man’s speech. Some photos of Andrew from the family archive and a signed photo of Daniel Craig! Apparently, he is Michelle’s favourite actor.

They held their reception at Altitude, Millbank after driving through the city on old London buses.

The ceremony was held in Islington is the council chamber which is a beautiful wood panelled room with red leather chairs.

Nichola walking to the buses that took us all to the wedding reception.
To all future brides reading this post – please note Nichola’s foresight in purchasing a white umbrella…
This has helped transform a wet and windy walk to the bus into an elegant, timeless moment. Just imagine this scene with a red and yellow golf umbrella bearing the logo of a well known investment bank…

Dean pouring bubbly on the bus for Nichola and Ed.

Special mention must got to James and Dean for their superb bar-tending efforts.
Most bar-keeps pour drinks with the benefit of a stable surface beneath their feet. However, as the bus rumbled through the rain streaked London streets, swinging from side to side, Dean and James negotiated the aisle and stairs, bottles in hand.
I’d like to think Reg Varney and Bob Grant from ‘On the Buses’ would have thoroughly approved!

Lucy and Alex were married on December 18th 2009 at the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, London.

The Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College is a truly magnificent room.
I’m always surprised at the number of London’s who’ve never been there or even know it exists. It is an architectural jem that is worth a day of anyone’s time to visit.

After walking down the aisle Lucy and Alex paused, held hands and looked towards me – which meant I was able to take this unexpected and impromtu portrait.

What isn’t eveident in this photo is that Tim, my assistant was stood on a chair, holding one of my lights over his head at full stretch.
Even on dark winters days, I try and use flash as little as possible, and Tim’s valliant exertions meant I was able to illuminate the guests – and the surrounds, with a soft, flattering light.

Suzanne and Nick’s Wedding, Merchant Taylors Hall

The Merchant Taylors is one of the the great Livery companies of the City of London and it celebrated the 600th aniversary of its charter in 2008. Entry to the Merchant Taylors is on Threadneedle Street, and its modest doorway gives no hint of the grandure of the rooms inside, or the quiet oasis of its courtyard.

Within a few seconds of entering the room, Belinda and David were surrounded on the dancefloor by their friends and family…

… and of course it wasn’t too long before Belinda and David’s brothers – with help from their friends had rustled up a couple of chairs and hoisted them aloft.

Belinda and David’s Mums, Elaine and Jane are good friends and they welcomed all the guests to the wedding.

The spectacular ballroom at Claridges was beautifully complemented by the stunning lighting.

This is Belinda’s brother Julian, his wife Michelle and their son Joseph. I photographed Michelle and Julian’s wedding in 2005 and it was lovely to see them again – as a very happy family.

The band were ‘The Allstars’ an ensemble of London’s finest session musicians. To say they can belt out a tune would be a gross understatement… they are absolutely brilliant and created a superb atmosphere.

Claridges is a fantastic venue for a wedding. Its art deco interiors exude an effortless elegance as soon as you walk though its doors.

At the end of the night, Belinda and David were invited onto the stage to say a few words and Belinda explained what a fantastic day she’d had – and how excited she was to have married David.

Jane and James’ Wedding, Old Royal Naval College

Jane and James were married on July 4th 2009 at the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, London.

The Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich is one of the most beautiful places in London. In fact, it’s been designated a World Heritage Site and is considered to be the “finest and most dramatically sited architectural and landscape ensemble in the British Isles.”

Jane arrived fashionably early, with her Dad and bridesmaids.

Jane and her family are from Ireland – James and his family are from Australia. It was a great crowd, and the cheer they gave for their bride and groom in this photo was the loudest of any wedding I’ve photographed yet… and that’s up against some pretty stiff competition!

It was also Jane’s Dad’s birthday and instead of a wedding cake, there was a 70th birthday cake.

The actor Albert Finney, playing Churchill in the final scene of ‘The Gathering Storm’
Just before James and Jane walked into their reception I said, “when you get to the top of the steps, turn around and look at me. It will be like the final scene of the film, ‘The Gathering Storm.’ Then you can have your very own ‘Albert Finney’ moment – he was the actor playing Churchill.”
‘I don’t know who Albert Finney is,’ replied James, ‘but I want one of his moments!’

A thank-you from Sarah and David

I received a lovely thank-you from Sarah and David, who were married at St Alfeges Greenwich, with their reception at The Old Royal Naval College on 21st March 2009.
Mark, thank you so much for the brilliant job you did on our wedding photos.
I appreciate that we were probably the least snap-happy couple you’ve ever photographed, so the fact there are so many of us looking cheerful and relaxed is little short of a miracle!
They look truly stunning and I am really grateful.
Thanks again, I am forever in your debt!
Sarah and David’s Wedding, Old Royal Naval College

Sarah and David were married on March 21st 2009 – a beautiful spring day in Greenwich, London.

The Ceremony was held at St Alfeges Church and Sarah, escorted by her brother, sisters and friends walked there from the venue.

The interior of the church is beautiful, and the ceremony was conducted by a family friend, Tristan.

Waking down the aisle

On their walk back to the Old Royal Naval College, Sarah and David were given lots of waves by passers-by. Cars parped their horns, and an impatient motorcyclist made a surprising effort to try and run them down.

The reception was at Admiral’s House at Old Royal Naval College.

‘Kiss-me-quick, no-one is looking…’

The College provides a stunning back-drop and is one of my favourite places to photograph weddings in London.
